Virtue of the Week
Diligence - to apply yourself to something and work to get it finished

Now that everyone has settled into another term, I’d like you to think about earning some of the 40 Community Involvement hours you need in order to graduate.  The purpose of community involvement is to help you recognize the important role that volunteering plays in keeping your community strong, to help you become part of your community as young adults and to help community members realize the value and potential of its youth. We recommend that you complete the 40 hours in your first two years of high school and while you’re attending school within your community.

If you still need Community Involvement (CI) hours, take some time to think about ways you can volunteer in your community. It’s much easier to get CI hours while you’re living at home and I’m sure there are many ways to help. Just remember that you must have your Mentor complete the Community Involvement hours form, get it signed, then email it to Lynda Kakepetum, our Guidance Counsellor so the hours can be recorded for you.

Here are some suggestions to get you thinking about this very important part of your high school education:

- Helping at special events such as community celebrations (Spring Clean-up, sports tournaments, Treaty Days)
- Assisting in planning, organizing and managing a social event on your reserve
- Bringing wood to an Elders home
- Preparing food for a feast or celebration
- Assisting in a search for a missing person
- Broadcasting at the local radio station

To find out more suggestions for community involvement refer to the KiHS Student and Parent Handbook 2009-10.

Have a wonderful week
Freda Kenny, KiHS Vice-Principal
